Writing Thank You Notes

By: Melissa Khalinsky

Your wedding isn't over when the honeymoon ends, it ends after you have written, and sent, your thank you notes!

Writing thank you notes is one of the more boring and tedious tasks that is associated with a wedding, and it is easy for people to be hurt if their gift is not acknowledged.

Here are a few hints to make writing thank you notes easier:

When opening your presents

Write on the card what present it came with
Keep a list of who gave you what gift
If you want to, take a photograph of you with each gift to send to the giver with your thank you note
Writing thank you notes

Hand write each note individually, it is much more personal than doing a mail merge on your computer
Include a short line about the gift and how it will be useful to you, or what you particularly liked about it, eg. "Thank you for the salad bowl. I look forward to having you over for a BBQ and showing it off." Or "Thank you for the towels. The colour matches our bathroom perfectly."
If someone gave you cash or a voucher, acknowledge it and, if possible, tell them what you used it for. Eg "Thankyou for your generous gift. We bought a wonderful coffee maker with it."
If someone gave you a card, and no gift, still send them a thank you note.
Sending thank you notes

It is best to send thank you notes in the post, or hand deliver them
If you have a list of your guests on computer, you can print out mailing labels or print envelopes.

Final note
As a final note, don't leave it too long after your wedding to send the thank you notes. Not only is it good to get them out of the way quickly, people like to know that you received and liked their gift.

Share the task of writing thank you notes between both of you, so that it doesn't seem like a big job. Maybe sit down together one night, open a bottle of wine, use some of those wine glasses you got as a wedding gift, and write your thank you notes together.
