Why I love my stylist

By: Melissa Khalinsky

Before I begin, I would like to state a few facts. I am a Mum. I am a business owner. I am not a celebrity or a millionaire. I have 2 small children. And I have a stylist.

The idea of a stylist first came to my notice around 16 years ago when I was a guide. We had a Colour Me Beautiful consultant come and talk to us about how the colours we wear make a difference as to how we look. If we wear the wrong colours, we look awful, but if we wear the right colours, we look fabulous. I tried to use this argument to tell my Mum the navy blue uniform wasn’t my colour, unfortunately it is, so that didn’t work!

A few years ago, it came back on my radar. I had my colours done (gone are the old Winter, Spring, Summer & Autumn that I was introduced to all those years ago), and some months later had a style consultation. I was now armed with the knowledge of the colours that suited me, as well as the styles that suited me – including details such as necklines, hem length, and so on. A few months on, I had my stylist come and do a wardrobe audit – resulting in most of my clothes being thrown away or given to the op shop. Some I hadn’t worn in months, or even years!

Recently I have had the great pleasure in engaging my stylists services to go shopping. We met in Chadstone Shopping Centre – a place I usually avoid for clothes shopping – and enjoyed an intense hour and a half shopping.

The beauty of shopping with a stylist is they know what is likely to look good on you before you even go near a change room. Rejected immediately were clothes the wrong colour, fabric, style, or were just simply yuk! Instead we headed to the change room in record time, armed with a dozen different articles. We were on a mission.

Swiftly items were discarded for not fitting, and off she went to get the next size up or down, as the case may be. She was able to cast a critical eye over clothes that really didn’t suit once they were on, and if I was wavering on a decision, helped me to see that if I was wavering, then those clothes probably weren’t right for me.

By the end of the shopping trip, I had parted with my hard earned money, and was armed with bags of gorgeous clothes. I went home and unpacked my purchases, stuffing a bag with clothes for the op shop while I was at it.

Sure, I felt like a Bad Mummy, spending over $300 on clothes for me, and nothing for the children. But hey, I deserved this treat, and boy did it feel good to treat myself.

The next day I put on one of my gorgeous new dresses, to be greeted by my five year old looking at me and saying “Wow Mummy. That is a pretty dress. You look so pretty in it.” That was just the icing on the cake.
