Water aint Water

By: Teresa Rimquist

An important part of maintaining a healthy body is said to be the consumption of one of the worlds purist commodities…….. water. But these days it seems that before you can begin to enjoy this simple pleasure, you must first get your mind around the plethora of choices on offer in the market. An article published by the SMH in February 2007, suggested there were over 1000 brands of water in the Australian market. And as water continues to become a precious commodity more and more of us will turn to filtered or spring water to maintain our intake of this healthy drink.

So what are the choices that confront us and what are the differences?

The first distinction you need to make is between those that are bottled or filtered water and spring water. The supermarket shelves are packed with rows of bottled water brands, but few stop to read the fine print and usually think they are paying a premium for natural spring water. But many of the brands on offer are simply bottled water. What does this mean? You as a consumer could be buying water that is from the tap and simply filtered rather than one that is sourced from an actual natural spring. In the US it is said 70 – 80% of bottled water is simply processed water, thus many consumers are paying for something they could get easily from home.

The second distinction is between spring water and mineral water. Mineral water is water containing minerals or other substances which can be naturally occurring or added. Spring water on the other hand is not carbonated and is sourced from a natural spring. Both water types are said to be healthy for different reasons, mineral water because of its natural minerals and spring water for its purity over containments used in town water supplies. The decision to choose spring water or mineral water is dependent on the individual persons preference however it is important to check that your potential choice does not have any added substances, as sometimes the bottling process can use additional additives to achieve industry standards.

Making a cost effective purchase

With 500 ml water bottles on sale for more than $1, the most cost effective choice to make is to buy water in bulk. By doing so it ensures that making a healthy decision will not be a costly decision allowing you to be able to stick to a healthy way of life. As buying spring water in bulk from the supermarket can be frustrating because of the difficulty to carry large volumes of water, why not consider home delivery. There are many companies in Australia offering spring water and a water cooler range including Neverfail Spring Water, www.neverfail.com.au and smaller niche providers like Daylesford Region Spring Water, www.daylesfordregionspringwater.com.au . Getting mineral water delivered is a little more difficult as it is not the type of product that is available in large bottles therefore if you prefer your water with bubbles then the supermarket is your best alternative.
