Top 10 ways to save money off your grocery bill

We all know the line, “if I didn’t have to shop I would be rich”. Now this cannot hope to make you rich, but with a few quick steps, you can save those very important dollars off your grocery bill.

So here are my 10 top tips.

1. Don’t shop when you are hungry. We have all heard this before, but it is true. If you shop when you are hungry, the items that they place at the end of the aisles and by the checkouts are purposely placed to appeal to those who impulse shop.
2. Write a list. I know, even my Mother does that. But by having a list, you can ensure that you pick up all the items you need to replenish those lost. This then cuts the “quick trip to the shop” excursions.
3. Get a freezer. By buying in bulk quantities including meat, you end up paying less money. Buy your meat in bulk, repackage at home and freeze it until you want it.
4. Grow your own veggies. Not only is this better for you and your family, because of the pesticides and Genetically Modified Foods, but it is also rewarding and tastes better.
5. Work out your meals and write a roster. If you know what you are planning to cook, you’re going to have a better idea of what you will need in the house.
6. Don’t buy filtered water – filter your own. Bottled water is so expensive and within a short period of time the money saved on the bottled water will pay for the filter.
7. Think about what you can do with your leftovers. Sometimes they can make a great meal – be inventive in the kitchen.
8. Forget pre-made meals. Put aside an hour or two on the weekend and make your own premade meals. Takeaway containers are now sold in most supermarkets, and you can save a lot of money this way. Freeze them until needed.
9. Get some chooks (if you can) and harvest your own eggs. Much healthier and the manure is great in the garden to help fertilise the veggies!
10. Invest in a good cookbook that has clear instructions and uses the cheaper cuts of meat effectively. Stews and soups are great in winter, stir fry and cold meat salads for summer.

With a little bit of effort we can all save money. Of course, not every can do all 10 of these things, but consider if we each did just 3 or 4 the amount of money we could each save.

Certainly gives a new meaning to “food for thought”
