As a Mum and a Party Plan consultant, having a baby doesn’t need to stop your business. These tips will work well for a baby that is not yet mobile; however it is up to you whether or not you are able to work while you have a small baby. When booking the party, let your hostess know you have a small baby and will need to bring him with you. By being up front about this, your hostess has the option of postponing the party until your baby is old enough to be left at home or going with another consultant. If she would prefer to go with another consultant, refer her to someone in your team if possible. Remind your hostess about your baby in your follow up calls, so she remembers. You don’t need to make a big deal about it; just a quiet reminder to make sure it is still OK with your hostess that your baby is with you. On the day of the party, leave extra time to set up at your hostess’s home. This will mean that if you need to feed your baby or change a nappy before the guests arrive, you are not rushing to set up your display. Obviously it is best to give your baby a feed and clean nappy before you leave home. If your baby is clingy, invest in a sling. Bear Hug Baby and Hip Bubby are two Business Mums with fantastic slings. Having a sling means your baby is close to you and your hands are free to do your demonstration, take orders, and generally be a consultant. If your baby is awake and happy to play, a play mat is a great investment. They are portable, easy to carry, and your baby can play with the toys that hang over him. They can also be set up on the floor near you so your baby is close to you, but out of the way so he’s not a distraction. Depending on your baby and the guests at the party, your hostess and her guests may want to cuddle him during the party. Whether you let this happen is entirely up to you and how well you know your hostess. Obviously if the hostess is someone you don’t know is very different to the hostess being your mother or sister. If your baby is unsettled for some reason, this may be a good option. Keeping all this in mind, a baby can be a distraction, especially if they decide to do something new, or are unsettled, even if they are being their own cute selves! They can also be an asset as your hostess and guests can see that having a baby doesn’t stop you, and this can be a recruiting point, as well as people seeing why you do what you do so that may encourage people to order from you. Having a new baby doesn’t have to stop you from running your business. With some planning and communication with your hostess, you can bring your baby with you, and you can continue to grow your business.
