Summer Holiday Kid Friendly Ideas

Top Holiday Kid Friendly Ideas
By Nicola Pitt
We all remember the days of long Summer break time. We used to ride around on our bikes and thought we were invincible. In todays world it is so important to ensure our safety that many of us outlawed these things at home. So we need to think of things that kids can do in our homes and back yards.
Here is a list of some cheap and easy to prepare activities to keep the kids busy in the lead up to Christmas and after.
1. Make a scrapbook of activity worksheets. Have a look around the net – google the keywords Christmas Activity Worksheets. I have done this for the last 5 years for my girls and even now (one is a teenager) they still ask will I be doing them this year. They love the word searches, stories and shopping ideas. Cover the scrapbook in cheap Christmas paper and keep it somewhere easy to reach. They are also great when you need a break.
2. Grab some cheap beads and fishing line or elastic – make a bracelet, necklace etc., You can even get them to wrap the item in tissue or tissue paper and they can give them as a cheap present to their friends. These will keep them busy for hours!
3. Make slime with cornflour and foodcolouring and water. Add some dettol and dishwashing liquid. Boil the cornflour and water in a saucepan until it is clear. Add the colour a few drops of dettol and dishwashing liquid. This can be stored for a few days in an airproof container – get the kids to make patterns on the table (cover with a plastic tablecloth) and they can make wrapping paper!
4. Popcorn – get the kids popping popcorn – thread it on a string and hang it off the washing line. They will have lots of fun trying to eat it off without their hands.
5. Bobbing for apples – eating our fruit has never been so much fun. This is refreshing too in the hot weather!
6. Get the kids making easy cooking presents. White Christmas, truffles etc., They are easy to make, and are a great homemade present. Present them in a box with some cellophane and a ribbon.
7. Plant a mini veggie garden, pot a plant or start some herbs. This is so easy and they can water them daily and weed them too. See how excited the kids are when the seedlings finally break through the surface. This can even be done on a balcony! If you go for bean sprouts etc they can then harvest and have them in sandwiches.
8. Put up a tent – this is one of my all time favourites. A cheap tent can be picked up for $15 and provides hours of fun. Once the kids are old enough to put up their own, they will cart bedding and teddies and pretend to play house til the cows come home. If you can’t afford a tent, let them use old sheets or pick some up from your local Op Shop they are cheap and they will have hours of fun.
9. Fishing – get a string line and attach to a stick or otherwise. Place a magnet on the end. Cut out half a dozen fish and place a magnet on them. Little kids love these ideas and they are cheap to put together.
10. Get some cardboard and challenge older kids to think up a new boardgame. Complete with challenge cards and rules. Then let them play it.
11. Card Games!! Cards are cheap and present so much fun – they can build a house or tower, play Go Fish or any other game you know.
12. Challenge the kids to a treasure hunt. Nominate 10 - 12 items, find hiding places and write rhymes for them to work out where to go next. If you forward plan, they can even find craft bits in each spot and at the end have to create something with the crafty bits.
Holidays can be fun – even in the heat of summer. Be inventive – then the kids use their brains and yet achieve a great holiday – and you don’t need to spend lots of money…..which is a bonus in tight economic times.
