Setting up an office for your child

By: Melissa Khalinsky

Children like to do what their parents are doing and to be where their parents are. While working from home, what better way to keep your children entertained than by setting up their own office in your office?

Find a child-sized table and chair. These don't have to be expensive - second hand shops, op-shops and garage sales are great places to find them. You could even paint the furniture bright colours or paint them in colours to match your office.

Depending upon your child's age, provide your child with an old telephone, keyboard, mouse, and other stationery. Instead of a computer and monitor, find a couple of cardboard boxes that can be used to represent a computer. On the monitor box, you may want to put a printout of a photo or some typing, to create a computer screen.

To further create the office for your child, make up some business cards for him/her. You may want to give them a title as part of your business, or create a business for them. For example, "Nathaniel's Creative Cards" or "Sarah's Fabulous Designs". Your child can even design a logo you can then scan into the computer and put on their business cards & letterhead. You may also choose to make a nameplate for his/her desk.

Provide your child with inexpensive office supplies. Depending on their age, these supplies may include coloured paper, crayons, pencils, pens, felt tip pens, glue, sticky tape, and so on. Scrap paper from the printer (paper that has been printed on one side) is great for younger children, because they can draw on the back of the paper.

Spending time with your child working in your office gives you some valuable time together. Your child will appreciate spending the time with you and helping you in your business. Making such an effort, you will not have to worry about ignoring your child. After all, aren't your children the reason you are working from home?
