By Nicola Pitt One of the hardest things I have ever done as a parent, is talk to my daughters about the facts of life. No, I am not ashamed to say that my stomach hurt and I was as nervous as can be. I actually invested in a really great book to share with my daughters – not strictly about the facts of life but focusing on a number of issues. It is a fun book which has these great mini quizzes, suggests ideas for outings to help ease the pressure and great ways to cope with “the talk” but one major point is – take your time. Open the discussion with a low-key subject, boys, bras anything that is not going to confront your daughter and make them uncomfortable. Have the discussion over a period of days or weeks – not all the information in one go, then let your daughter digest it, give her time to settle and then tackle another part of the issue. It took us about 3 weeks to work through it – but my daughters and I were able to have the discussion in a frank way. But, the great thing was, by taking it in small bites we were able to open the lines of communication and they will ask questions, things they have mulled over in their heads. Things that they thought were important - they asked me through this process. But, and this is a big but, this worked for me - but may not work for you. Each family is different, and there is no one right way to undertake this step. What can you do? Find a book, talk to friends with children slightly older, if you have definite religious beliefs take that into consideration too. Talk to your parents if you are close enough or feel able. Find a way that works for you, be it all at once or in small bites- test the water and if that way doesn't work try another. You know your child best and you are the best teacher. But make the time, down the track they will thank you for being honest and frank. Til next time, Enjoy your Boudoir!
