KIDS' BIRTHDAY PARTIES - THE KEY ELEMENTS

Childrens' birthday parties are one of the highlights of family life. I only wish I had a proven checklist when I organised my eldest son's first birthday party.

Organising and holding a child's birthday party that is successful can be stressful. Sometimes nothing goes quite as planned and there are tears before bedtime. That said, no sooner than you have cleaned up after the last one they will start talking about and planning their next party.

There are no hard and fast rules for holding a successful birthday party for your child. Try and keep it simple and be ready to improvise. These are two key elements to a successful party.

Your child's enjoyment on the day is the obvious priority in your birthday party planning and preparation. Remember, it's their day. And really, it's the day we set aside each year to celebrate the day they were born. Your aim is always to create invaluable happy memories for your child and their friends.

Be flexible with your plans. Roughly map out a plan allowing plenty of room for what might take place the day. Kids are extremely perceptive and will sense your mood. If you're relaxed, your child will pick up on this and be happy too.

The basic expectations of children's birthday parties in today's society involves:

* invitations
* colourfully wrapped presents
* fun games
* prizes
* party food
* a colourful birthday cake with candles
* decorations, and a
* party bag filled with lollies and gadgets for their friends.

Work around these basic expectations and elaborate to your heart's desire!

Most importantly, try to be creative and flexible. Make the day one to be enjoyed by all and sundry, and have fun! Why should the kids have all the fun?
