Buying a First Bra

Buying a first bra for a girl can be both other whelming and exciting. For a young girl this is sometimes the first step into a scary part of becoming a woman. Girls at this time are experiencing enormous changes in their body as the hormones begin to course causing the growth of breast tissue amongst many other physiological changes.

As a mother of 2 teenage daughters, the first trip can be both daunting and a time of accepting that our little girls are growing up. As a result, many mothers try not to acknowledge this, and when it comes to shopping for a first bra, they will rush in pick up a 10A and say that is done.

As your little girls grow into young women, it is important to set a standard for your daughters. The first is to ensure that they are fitted correctly for their first bra. Why? Well according to many experts the reasons include:

*reduce back pain and headaches
*can improve posture,
*overall appearance and
*enhance self-esteem

5 Quick Tips for choosing the right bra

1. If the underwire touches your breast tissue – it doesn’t fit. It should sit on the ribcage and never touch the breast tissue.
2. The centre section – the pretty bit between the cups should sit flat against the body.
3. Do you spill over the top? Bottom? Either side? If so the cup does not fit. Time for a new fitting to check what size you should have.
4. Bras like shoes stretch. The first wear should be firm on the loosest hook fitting – in time it will loosen.
5. If your bra is leaving marks on your body – it is time for a new one. A good fitting bra will not cut into your skin, but will rest against the body giving support.

Some tips for the first fitting:

*Take your time, rushing this trip sends the message to your daughter that you are either really embarrassed or that you don’t really want to be wasting your time on this expedition.

*Plan a special lunch around the fitting. This is an opportunity to bond as mother and daughter – and lets be honest they are really hard to come by usually with this age group. Maybe you could take in a movie, expand the wardrobe to include some good quality basic pieces, nice dressy pants and skirts – but most of all plan this with your daughter.

*Book a fitting in advance. By doing this, your daughter is more likely to have time to feel comfortable about the plan. You won’t be standing around in a crowded store full of women (this will usually make your daughter feel even more self conscious.)

*Make an agreement on how many pieces you will buy. At least 4 is a great idea – and choose a range (maybe 2 suitable for school – plain white but with pretty straps or similar), 1 in a funky teenage design (for when it is not school time) and a sport bra.

*Be prepared to open up to any queries she might have at this time about her changing body. Explain that her breasts will continue to grow some time and what to expect – including how to tell if her bra does not fit. If you are unsure – ask the lady fitting your daughter to explain this for you

But most of all expect the unexpected, be honest with your daughter – if you are uncomfortable be upfront (she will appreciate this) and try to enjoy yourself. This is a special time for a young girl and her mum.
