Are There Fairies at the Bottom of Your Garden?

By: oh my giddy aunt

Is there a fairy down amongst the shrubs; or is it an elf or a gnome or a pixie or a goblin? How would you know the difference?

Chief Giddy Aunt Nikki believes that there are fairies at the bottom of her garden and she says she’s been around long enough to recognise the signs. She also says that it is important to know who is who in the fairy world so here is her quick explanation.

A fairy usually has wings and knows how to be happy and make things wonderful. It’s often the girl fairies that we see, but there are also boy fairies. People have believed in fairies for hundreds of years and many fairies have their own special jobs. You may have heard of flower fairies and bush fairies but you will find fairies wherever something magical has occurred, even if it is only a rainbow in a slick of oil.

Pixies and elves are a lot cheekier than fairies. Perhaps that is why they don’t usually have wings, they would get into too much mischief! However they do have their own magic and create a lot of fun. Elves tend to be a little harder working than pixies and you will often find an elf looking after birds or animals or even humans – remember the elves and the shoemaker?

Gnomes are nearly always found in the garden – or at least near trees. They may look like a tiny version of 120-year-old humans, but often they are even older than that! Gnomes are very kind hearted and take life quite seriously, but they know how to have a chuckle when the time is right.

Goblins…. well, it is best not to have those around. Goblins wake up every morning on the wrong side of the bed and then spend the rest of the day trying to make everyone else cross and cranky. They have a very strange sense of what looks, smells or tastes good and “green slimy” anything is their favourite! Usually if something is broken, or has gone wrong a Goblin will be responsible somewhere along the line. It isn’t too hard to get rid of goblins – a giggle, a smile or (if you can bear to do it) a kiss on their rubbery noses will send them on their way.
