All Natural - All Clean!

Admittedly cleaning is not my favourite pastime and anyone who knows me will not be surprised at all by this statement. But I am also aware that if I actually leave it "long enough" - no-one else will do it for me!

So for this reason alone I am a consumer and user of cleaning products. As a mother I am concerned about having products which may be hazardous for my child so choosing a more natural way of cleaning is very important to me. Despite the heightened awareness of the damage to our environment, cleaning products sold in the supermarket are still damaging to the eco-system, not to mention very costly.

Many people are now electing to make their own cleaning products using ingredients usually found in the home as a cost effective way to clean the house. Others are purchasing the ingredients specifically to make their own cleaning products as an environmentally friendly way to get the job done. There are no harmful smells or toxins left by the home-made products and opting to clean "green" is a growing trend among housecleaners.

When setting down the path of the DIY cleaner, make sure you are prepared for the task. You will need a range of bottles to store the recipes you make as well as clear labels so as not to confuse your products. Common ingredients found in natural cleaning products include baking soda, vinegar, lanolin, castile soap, cream of tartar and essential oils. Most of these products can be found in your local supermarket or health food store.

Here are some recipes to help get you started.

All Purpose Cleaner

- 1/4 cup of Liquid Castile Soap
- 2 tablespoons White Distilled Vinegar
- 1 teaspoon Borax
- Water
- 10-15 drops of Essential Oil
- Trigger Spray Bottle

Mix vinegar with borax in the spray bottle. Fill the bottle with very hot water and shake until dissolved. Add liquid soap and essential oils.

Bathroom Cleaner

- Borax
- Lemon Juice
- Jar

To clean sinks and bathtubs, combine the two ingredients into a moderately thick paste. Scrub and rinse well. For difficult stains, leave paste on for a few hours or overnight.

Disinfectant Spray

- 2 cups Water
- 1/4 cup White Distilled Vinegar
- 1/4 teaspoon Tea Tree Oil
- 1/4 teaspoon Lavender Oil
- Trigger Spray Bottle

Combine ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake before use.

Tile Cleaner

- 2/3 cup Baking Soda
- 1/2 cup Liquid Castile Soap
- 2 tablespoons White Distilled Vinegar
- 1/2 cup Water
- 3 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
- Trigger Spray Bottle

Mix baking soda and liquid soap. Add water, vinegar and oil. Store in a trigger bottle and shake before use.

Room Spray

- 50ml Water
- 50ml Ethanol or Vodka
- 20 drops of Essential Oils
- Trigger Spray Bottle

Combine ingredients and store in a spray bottle. Shake well before use.

Window Cleaner

- 1 litre Warm Water
- 1/4 cup Corn Starch
- Trigger Spray Bottle

Combine ingredients and store in a spray bottle.

There are a great number of recipes which can be found on the Internet for all kinds of household cleaning chores. Once you start using these you will discover that they can be much more effective than store-brought products for less than a quarter of the price.
