Do you have those days when you just can’t get started? You have things to do – you just don’t feel like doing them. When you work from home, it can sometimes be difficult to get motivated. We all have these days occasionally. To get motivated you first need to recognise why you’re struggling to do things. Perhaps you’re too tired, sad, or have more enjoyable things you’d rather be doing. Once you’ve identified the reason it’s easier to solve. If you feel tired or lethargic, ensure you’ve had some healthy food and perhaps vitamin supplements, then do some form of exercise or activity that energises you, even just for 15 minutes. This may be difficult, but think of how you’ll benefit afterwards. List the things that energise you – exercise, good conversation, music. Sometimes you don’t even have to DO the activity. Just visualising it may be enough to lift your spirits. Then think of how good you’ll feel once you’ve achieved your tasks. Remember those days when you get through everything on your ‘to-do’ list? Remember how satisfied you felt at the end of the day? Try to really feel that satisfaction. Wouldn’t it be good if you could feel this way everyday? You can if you focus on this feeling and start doing things. A friend of mine suddenly began accomplishing more in one day than she normally would in a week! Her new-fashioned ‘to-do’ list begins like this: Get up Shower Dress Eat breakfast Get the idea? She explained that by including these, she could power through the first 10 things, crossing each item off with a thick red pen. Seeing all those red lines through tasks encourages her to keep going. Some helpful techniques to lift your motivation include: 1. Begin with the most urgent or difficult task. You’ll feel so good when you’ve finished, you’ll be encouraged to keep going. 2. If you’re feeling stressed and don’t know where to start, take a deep breath and calm yourself. Make a prioritised list and start at the beginning. Remember: there’s only so much one person can do. 3. Stick your latest credit card statement somewhere visible as an incentive! 4. Put some quick, easy tasks at the top of your to-do list to get you going. 5. Find ways to make tasks fun. 6. Focus on the satisfaction of knowing you’ve achieved all you were capable of at the end of the day. 7. Allow time to rest.
